A conversation with Aziz Yimam
Music managers are a central part of any healthy music industry. They wear multiple hats, all to ensure a happy marriage between the musician, the audience and the industry as a whole. But how do they operate in Ethiopia? What role do they play?
Aziz Yimam is a managing director and founder of EA Advertising and Consultancy Plc. His company engages in artist management, advertising, digital marketing, and event organization. He first entered the business by managing Comedian Tomas from 2017 to 2019. Since then, Aziz has worked on numerous successful projects such as the 90s fest at the Kuriftu Water Park, Tsedi’s album “Sew” and managed the openings of Pizza Hut and Cold Stone Creamery. He is now managing Hewan Gebrewold from Jano Band and an up-and-coming musician, currently a medical doctor, Leli.
GETZ sat down with Aziz for an exclusive look into the world of music management.

የሙዚቃ ማኔጀር የጤነኛ ሙዚቃ ኢንዱስትሪ ማገር ነው። የነበሩት ጠላቻዎች ያሳዩት በሙዚቀኛው ፤ በአድማጩ እና በኢንዱስትሪው መሃል ወዳጅነት እንዲደረጅ ማድረጋቸውን ነው። ግን ኢቲዮጵያ ውስጥ እንዴት ነው የሚሰሩት? የሄዋን ገብረወልድ ማኔጀር የሆነው አዚዝ ይማም ስለስራው እና በዛ በኩል ስላለው የሙዝቃው ኢንዱስትሪ መልክ አጫውቶናል።
ስለ አዚዝ
አዚዝ ይማም የኢኤ ማስታወቂያ እና አማካሪ መስራች እና ማኔጂንግ ዳይሪክተር ነው። በአርቲስት ውክልና ፣ ማስታወቂያ ፣ ዲጂታል ማርኬቲንግ ፣ ኢቭንቶች እና መሰል ስራዎች ላይ ነው የተሰማራው። ከ2017 እስከ 2019 እውቅናን ከማግኘቱ በፊትም ሆነ በኋላ ፤ ኮሜዲያን ቶማስን በመወከል ነበር ስራውን የጀመረው። አዚዝ ፤ በመቀጠልም የኩሪፍቱ ዋተር ፓርኩን “የ90ዎቹ ፌሽታን”፤ የፀዲስን “ሰው” የተሰኘ አልበምን እንዲሁም የፒዛ ሃትን እና የኮልድ ስቶን ሴርሞኒን ምርቃት ጨምሮ ብዙ የተሳካ ስራዎችን ለመስራት ችሏል። አሁን ደሞ የጃኖ ባንዷን ሄዋን ገብረ ወልድ እና የህክምና ተማሪ የሆነችው አርቲስት ሊሊ ማኔጀር ነው።
What exactly does a music manager do?
Music management is better described as artist management. In the western world, the artist industry is a huge business realm. If we rely on the most updated artist management guidelines an artist can have a creativity manager, marketing manager, personal manager, tour manager, technical manager, and branding manager, each with their own job descriptions.
When it comes to Ethiopia, an artist cannot afford to pay all these managers (an artist is always the employer of the manager) so having a personal manager and giving all the responsibilities to him/her is the norm. For this job, we get about fifteen to twenty percent from the artist’s income. Some of our responsibilities might include: branding and social media management, promotional work, preparing an annual plan for the artists, and following up. We also search and propose financial partners for the artists’ planned projects.
A good manager needs to have an understanding of creative work, excellent communication skills, and be well acquainted with available guidelines and industry updates. Just like any other job, this is a relationship economy. The artist needs the manager as they are the catalyst to their success. They need to respect each other and that in turn will result in a successful partnership.
የሙዚቃ ማኔጀር ስራ
የሙዚቃ ማኔጀርን የአርቲስት ማኔጀር የሚለው ይበልጥ ይገልፀዋል። በምዕራቡ አለም የአሪጽት ኢንዱስትሪ እጅግ ጠንካራ ኢኮኖሚ ነው። የተሻለውን የአትሪጽት ማንጅመት መመሪያ ካየን አንድ አርቲስት የፈጠራ ማኔጀር ፣ የማርኬቲን ማኔጀር ፣ የግል ማኔጀር ፣ የቱር ማኔጀር ፣ ቴክኒካል ማኔጀር እና ብራንዲንግ ማኔጀር ሊኖረው ይገባል። ሁሉም የተለያዩ ሰዎች ናቸው። ስራቸውም የተለያየ ነው። ወደ እኛ ሃገር መልስ ስንል ግን አርቲስቱ ለዚህ ሁላ ሰው መክፈል አይችልም (አርቲስቱ የማኔጀሩ ቀጣሪ ነው)። ስለዚህ የግል ማኔጀር ኑሮት ሃላፊነቱ እንዳለ ለእሱ/ሷ መስጠት ነው ያለው አማራጭ። ለዚህ ስራም ከአርቲስቱ ገቢ ላይ ከ15 እስከ 20 በመቶ ክፍያ እናእገኛለን። ከሃላፊነቶቻችን የተወሰኑት የማህበራዊ ሚዲያ እና ብራንዲንግ ስራ ፤ ለአርቲስቱ ገበያን መፍጠር (ኮንሰር/ቱር ፤ የማስታወቂያ ስራ ፣ የዩቲዩም ገቢ እና ሌሎች ገቢ የሚያመጡለት የፈጠራ ስራዎችን እንዲያገኝ ማድረግ)፤ ለአርቲስቱ አመታዊ እቅድ ማውጣት እና አኪያሄዱን መከታተል (እቅዱ የሙዚቃ ቪዲዮ መስራትን ፤ የራሱን ኮንሰርት ፤ ከሌሎች አርቲስቶች ጋር አብሮ መስራትን ፤ የሙዚቃ አልበምን ሊያካትት ይችላል)፤ ከፈጠራ ስራዎቹ አንፃር አርቲስቱን ማማከር (እዚህ ላይ በስራው ዙሪያ ልምድ ሊኖረን ይገባል። እኔ እሱን እያደረኩ አይደለም)፤ ለሚኖሩት ቀጣይ ፕሮጀክቶች የገንዘብ ምንጭ እና አጋሮችን ማመቻቸት ይገኙበታል።
ጥሩ ማኔጀር የፈጠራ ስራን ፤ ንድፍን ፤ ብራንዲንግ እና ማርኬቲግን መረዳት የሚችል መሆን አለበት። በዛ ላይም ጥሩ የመግባባት ችሎታ ሊኖረው እና ራሱን ከጊዜው ጋር አብሮ እያሻሻለ የሚሆሄድ ሊሆን ይገባል። ልክ እንደማንኛው ስራ ይሄም በግንኙነት ላይ የተመሰረት ነው። አርቲስቱ ማኔጀሩን ፤ የስኬቱ አፋጣኝ ስለሆነ ይፈልገዋል። መከባበራቸው ለስኬታማ ወዳጅነታቸው መሰረት ነው።
What’s it like to produce an album in Ethiopia?
In Ethiopia, making an album isn’t cheap. The task encapsulates creating or buying lyrics and melody, voice rehearsal, recording, music arrangement, music mixing, and mastering. Each of these steps has their expenses along with effort. This is what it takes for new artists to find their audience.
In addition to that, I believe there are four conditions that have to be met for an artist. I like to call these the four Ps. Any musician needs to have a product and they need to work on their personality. Once they have a brand, they need to cultivate it with publicity along with their music. Then they’ll reach a stage where they can be a public figure. This is the status artists want to reach; to become a role model for their fans.
አልበም ማሳተም በኢትዮጵያ
ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ አልበም መስራት ርካሽ አይደለም። ጉዞው በአጠቃላይ ግጥም እና ዜማ መስራትም ሆነ መግዛትን ፤ የድምፅ ልምምድን ፣ ቀረፃን ፤ የሙዚውቃ አሬንጅመትን ፣ ሚክሲንግ እና ማስተሪንግን ይይዛል። እዚህ ውስጥ ያለችው እያንዳንዷ እርምጃ ከጥረቱ ጋር አብሮ ክፍያ አላት። ይህ ነው እንግዲህ አድማጭ ጋር ለመድረስ ከአርቲስቱ የሚጠበቀው።
ከዛም አልፎ አርቲስቱ ሊያሟላው ይገባል ብዬ የማምንባቸው አራት ነገሮች አሉ። ሁሉም ሙዚቀኛ ምርት ሊኖረው ይገባል (ለሙዚቀኛ ሙዚቃ ነው ምርቱ)፤ እውቅንው ከመምጣቱ በፊትም እንደ ሃገሩ ወግ እና ባህል ራሳቸውን ሊቀርፁ ይገባል። አንዴ መለያ ከኖራቸው ወዲህ ከሙዚቃቸው ጋር ታዋቂነታቸውንም ኮትኩተው ሊያሳድጉ ይገባል። ያኔ ነው ስመጥር መሆን የሚችሉት። እሱ ማለት አርቲስቱ ለአድቂዎቹ አራያ መሆን ሊደርስበት የሚፈልገው ቦታ ሲሆን ነው።
How does artist management work in Ethiopia?
This is a relatively new field for the country. Addis Gessesse pioneered it and Eyob Alemayehu, founder of Yisakal Entertainment, continued it. Now people like me are carrying the torch. Back in the day, artist managers in Ethiopia worked as brokers and tour managers. This has matured into a profession that is backed with a proper understanding of the role it plays in the industry.
Rophnan’s journey is a notable example of a successful management effort. Everything from his introduction as an artist, his branding, album promotion strategies, concert tours, social media use, his class/quality, and scheduled media appearances can the best example of managers in an artist’s life.
አርቲስት ማኔጅመት በኢትዮጵያ
ይህ በአንፃራዊነት አዲስ የሚባል ዘርፍ ነው። አዲስ ገሰሰ ጎሁን ሲቀደው ፤ የይሳቃል ኢንተርቴይመንቱ ኢዮብ ይሳቅ አስቀጥሎታል። አሁን ደሞ እንደእኔ ያለን ሰዎች ሻማውን ተረክበናል። ድሮ ድሮ አርቲስት ማኔጀሮች ዋጋ ተደራዳሪ እና ቱር ማኔጀር ሆነው ነበር የሰሩት። አሁን ኢንደስትሪ ውስጥ ያለው ቦታ ከተሻለ መረዳት ጋር አብሮ አድጓል።
የሮፍናን ጉዞ የተሳካ የማኔጅመት ስራ ጥሩ ማሳያ ነው። እንደ አርቲስት ከመተዋወቁ ጀምሮ ፤ መለያው ፤ አልበሙ የተዋወቀበት ስትራቴጂ ፣ ኮንሰርት ቱሮቹ ፣ የማህበራዊ ሚዲያ ተሳትፎው ፣ መደብ/ጥራቱ እንዲሁም በሚዲያዎች ላይ ሰአቱን ጠብቆ መቅረብ የስኬቴማ ማኔጀር ትክክለኛ ምሳሌ ናቸው።
What would you say to someone looking to make it as a manager? What changes would you like to see in the industry?
This industry is young, there are opportunities for anyone that’s willing. However, anyone joining this industry needs to know what is expected of them. It is one of the toughest but really rewarding jobs out there if you’re prepared for the challenges.
I think we should have an artist managers’ association to encourage communication between managers, just like there are associations for other professions.
The industry has a lot of room for improvement but it is one that can eventually become a source of income for the country. Thanks to platforms like YouTube, Amazon Music and iTunes, an artist can gain foreign currency. But this has to be complemented by systemic support from the government. I would like to advocate, eventually, for the Ministry of Education to invest in an artist management department at the university level. That would be a major stepping stone.
ዲጂታል ቴክኖሎጂ
ቴክኖሎጂ ህይወትን ያቀላል። የእኛንም አቅሎታል። አርቲስታችን ውጤታማ እንዲሆን ቴክኖሎጂ ያስፈልገናል። ለስራው ህይወት ስርዓት የሚጠቅም ነገር ነው።
በመጨረሻም
ይህ ገና የሚያድግ ኢንዱስትሪ ነው። ፍላጎቱ ላለው ሁሉ እድል አለ። ይሁን እንጂ አንድን ዘርፍ መቀላልቀል የሚፈልግ ሰው ሁሉ የሚጠበቅበትን ሊያውቅ ይገባል። መሰናክሎቹን ለማለፍ ዝግጁ ከሆንክ ፤ በጣም ከባድ ቢሆንም መልሶ የሚከፍል ስራ ነው።
የልምድ ልውውጥ እና ኝኙነታችን እንዲዳብር ፤ ልክ እንደ ሌሎች ሙያዎች ፤ የአርቲስት ማኔጀሮች ማህበር ሊኖረን ይገባል።
ለማጠቃለልም ፤ የሙዚቃው ኢንዱስትሪ ብዙ ክፍተት ቢኖርበትም ለሃገር ግን ትልቅ የገቢ ምንጭ ሊሆን ይችላል። እንደ ዩቲዩብ ፣ አማዞን እና አይቲዩን ያሉ ማሰራጫዎች ምስጋና ይግባቸውና አሪቲስቱ የውጭ ገበያም ተቋዳሽ መሆን ችሏል። ይህ ግን በመንግስት ሊታገዝ ይገባዋል። ትምህርት ሚንስቴር የሙዚቃ ማኔጅመንትን ትምህርትን በዩኒቨርስቲ ደረጃ ሊሰጥ ይገባል ብዬ አጥብቄ አምናለው። ያ ትልቅ መሸጋገሪያ ድልድይ ይሆናል።
