Editor’s Note

As we found ourselves immersed in the day-to-day, trying to balance work and life, it became hard to remember the importance of freely exploring ideas and producing work that speaks for us. We even managed to forget that we had a magazine, designed to be an unfiltered space where artists can express themselves as they are.

For our comeback issue, we searched for compelling themes, relevant to ourselves and artists in our community. Ironically, we found that nothing riled us up more than the theme of hate. In fact, it became quite hard to curtail each team member’s enthusiastic monologues about the various public figures, human tendencies and personal vendettas.

A debate ensued about the risks of the theme: people may associate it with the act of spewing and inciting discrimination but we decided to go beyond a purely negative characterisation. We agreed not to shy away from the taboos associated with the topic and instead to explore Its status as an integral part of the human experience. We see hate through a nuanced lens, as a generative force which contains both negative and positive manifestations…

Ten Ethiopian artists were invited to produce original works and were given the space to explore this complicated, yet very human emotion, unfiltered. The experiment yielded a multitude of art works across a diverse set of mediums such as digital painting, narrative prose, photography and mixed media art.

የአዘጋጁ ማስታወሻ

በኑሮ ዱብ-ዱብ ተጠምደን፣ ሥራን እና የግል ህይወትን ለማመጣጠን በምናደርገው ጥረት፣ ሀሳቦችን በነፃነት የማሰስ እና እኛን የሚወክል ሥራ የማፍራትን አስፈላጊነት ማስታወስ ከባድ ሆኖብን ነበር። ከዚህም አልፎ አርቲስቶች ማንነታቸውን ያለምንም ገደብና ሳንሱር የሚገልጹበት ነፃ መድረክ እንዲሆን የተዘጋጀ መጽሔት እንዳለን እስከመርሳት ደርሰን ነበር።

ዳግም ወደ እናንተ በምንመለስበት በዚህ እትማችን፣ ለእኛም ሆነ በማህበረሰባችን ውስጥ ላሉ አርቲስቶች ትርጉም ያላቸውን እና ቀልብ የሚስቡ ጭብጦችን ስንፈልግ ነበር። የሚገርመው ነገር ግን፣ ከ‹‹ጥላቻ›› ጭብጥ ልክ ስሜታችንን የቀሰቀሰው ሌላ ምንም ነገር አልነበረም። እንዲያውም የእያንዳንዱን የቡድን አባል ስለ ተለያዩ ታዋቂ ሰዎች፣ ሰዋዊ ዝንባሌዎች እና ግላዊ ቂሞች የሚያደርገውን ስሜት የተሞላበት ረጅም ንግግር መግታት እጅግ ከባድ ሆኖብን ነበር።

በዚህ ጭብጥ ዙሪያ ሊኖር ስለሚችለው አደጋ ክርክር ተነስቶ ነበር፤ ሰዎች አድልዎን ከማስፋፋት እና ከማነሳሳት ድርጊት ጋር ሊያያይዙት ይችላሉ የሚል ስጋት ቢኖርም፣ እኛ ግን ከፍፁም አሉታዊ ፍረጃ ባሻገር ሄደን ልንመለከተው ወሰንን። ከርዕሰ ጉዳዩ ጋር ከተያያዙ ማህበራዊ ክልከላዎች (taboos) ላለመሸሽ እና ከዚህ ይልቅ የሰው ልጅ ህይወት እና ተሞክሮ ወሳኝ አካል መሆኑን ለመመርመር ተስማምተናል። ጥላቻን በጥልቀት ስንመለከተው፣ አሉታዊም ሆነ አዎንታዊ መገለጫዎችን በውስጡ የያዘ አንቀሳቃሽ/ፈጣሪ ኃይል ሆኖ እናገኘዋለን…

አሥር ኢትዮጵያውያን አርቲስቶች የራሳቸውን አዳዲስ የጥበብ ሥራዎች እንዲያቀርቡ ተጋብዘው፣ ይህንን ውስብስብ ነገር ግን እጅግ ሰዋዊ የሆነ ስሜት ያለምንም ገደብ በነፃነት እንዲመረምሩት መድረኩ ክፍት ተደርጎላቸዋል። ይህ ሙከራ በዲጂታል ስዕል፣ በትረካ ፅሁፍ፣ በፎቶግራፍ እና በmixed media ጥበብ ዘርፎች በርካታ እና የተለያዩ የጥበብ ሥራዎችን ሊያስገኝ ችሏል።

እንደወትሮው ሁሉ፣ ሥራቸውን እንድናስተናግድላቸው ላመኑን ድንቅ አርቲስቶች እንዲሁም ለእናንተ ለአንባቢዎቻችን ከልብ የመነጨ ምስጋናችንን እያቀረብን፤ እያንዳንዷን አዲስ እትም ይዘን በምንመጣበት ጊዜ ሁሉ ከእናንተ ጋር ለመገናኘት በጉጉት እንጠብቃለን።
